The Wind Waker Environment Objects
The Great Sea is vast and varied, with environmental objects and obstacles that can help or hinder Link in his quest. Here are the objects you will cross and need to understand through your adventure in the Wind Waker.
| Bomb Plants These can be lifted and have the same actions and intensity of your quest item bombs. Beware, if you strike it with your sword or other weapon, it will explode. |
![]() | Cannon Boats These can be found patroling several areas of the Great Sea. To sink them, close in and fire bombs at them. |
![]() | Cyclones Until you defeat Cyclos, his cyclones roam the Great Sea to suck up any boat that gets too close. If you have the Hero's Bow, close in to a cyclone and shoot arrows at Cyclos, found near the top of it. |
![]() | Ghost Ship The Ghost Ship appears at seven islands during the seven phases of the moon. You will need the Ghost Ship chart, else it will vanish when you get close to it. |
![]() | Holes Occasionally, Link will come across holes in the ground. They will be under rocks, in thick grass, and even in the open. Drop into them to reach a hidden cavern. |
![]() | Long Grass and Bushes Link can cut down grass, bushes, and trees with his sword. Often, you will find minor items left behind. |
![]() | Narrow Ledges Link can sidle across or hang from narrow ledges. If he is hit by an enemy, or otherwise injured, he will fall. |
![]() | Post Boxes Many of the Great Sea's islands have post boxes. You can check them to see if you have mail or use them to deliver mail from your Delivery Bag. A postbox that has mail for Link bounces. |
![]() | Rings of Light These rings of light that float on the Great Sea's surface indicate there is a treasure below. As you draw close, they will fade but you will hear a chiming noise. Use the Grappling Hook to retrieve the treasure. |
![]() | Rocks, Headstones Link can lift small rock's from the beginning, but will need extra muscle to lift the larger headstones found across the Great Sea. Some rocks can be bombed into pieces. |
![]() | Sea Platforms These are Sea Bokoblin outposts found standing tall above the Great Sea's water. Defeat the Bokoblins and other obstacles found on them to get hidden treasures. |
![]() | Stakes and Pegs When you approach a large wooden stake or peg and a yellow arrow appears over it, use the Skull Hammer to pound it down. |
![]() | Submarines Several submarine's piloted by Ganon's minions lurk beneath the ocean's waves. When you find one, hop out of the boat and swim to it to find the enemies inside and claim a major treasure. |
![]() | Trees Link can knock items out of a tree by rolling into it. Link's hookshot can also target trees and pull him up to them. Makar can plant seeds in soft Earth and grow trees. |
![]() | Updrafts Updrafts are small cyclones. If Link glides into one with his Deku Leaf, it propels him upward. Use updrafts to glide to ledges that are higher than the platform you glide from. |
![]() | Water Link can swim in deep water, but only for a short period of time. You have a gauge to let you know when Link will run out of air and die. |
| Whirlpools Link has to make his way through more than one whirlpool in the course of the Wind Waker. When you are caught in a whirlpool, you must overcome some objective, such as defeating an enemy, to avoid being sucked in. If you are sucked into a whirpool, you appear in a different quadrant of the Great Sea and loose health. |
![]() | Wind Wind is important in The Legend of Zelda : The Wind Waker. Not only does it determine your boats momentum, but can also work for or against you when gliding with the Deku Leaf. |
![]() | Baba Buds Jump into these purple buds and they will give your Magic Meter a boost and propel you into the air. You can use the joystick to control your direction. |
![]() | Beams of Light Link and Medli can reflect Light Beams with the Mirror Shield and Harp, respectively. Reflected light will disintegrate some things, reveal translucent chests, and injure some enemies. |
| Big Key Locked Doors The door to each boss is sealed, and you need a Big Key to open it. After you open it, you will be led to the boss' chamber. |
![]() | Blocks and Crates You can push or pull blocks and crates, and Link can lift crates. You can also climb on the blocks. |
![]() | Bridges Be careful fighting on these rope suspension bridges. They sway, and swords can cut (and fire can burn) through the bridges support ropes, sending the whole thing crashing! |
![]() | Cable Platforms These are found in the Forbidden Woods dungeon. These platforms run along a cable above them. Use the Deku Leaf to blow a gust of wind at the pinwheel nearby. Face in the opposite direction you want to go in when doing this. |
![]() | Chests Chests contain treasures. Chests are mapped on the dungeon map after you find the dungeon compass. Some chests are translucent, you will need to reflect light on them to open them. |
![]() | Cracked Floor Tiles Cracked floor tiles and weakened parts of the floor. You can stomp down on them with the Iron Boots to go crashing through one to the area below. |
![]() | Eye Plaques These decorations are found in the Tower of the Gods. When shot with an arrow, they act as a switch and perform some action. |
![]() | Ice Icy surfaces are slick, and it's hard to control Link when he moves across it. Move slowly and don't make any sudden movements. |
![]() | Lava Lava is hot (duh). If you fall in it, you will loose a quarter of a heart and reappear at the room's entrance. |
![]() | Locked Doors Locked doors open with small keys. Each dungeon has as many small keys as it does locked doors. These keys cannot open doors in other dungeons. |
![]() | Paralyzing Fog Seen in the Earth Temple, this blueish fog makes Link temporarily unable to use his sword and items. He will recover after a few seconds, or when he steps into light. |
![]() | Piles of Leaves Link will come across several piles of leaves in the Forbidden Woods. Use the Deku Leaf to blow them away or use a burning deku stick to set them afire. Usually, small rewards can be found under them. |
![]() | Pinwheels You can activate a pinwheel with a gust from the Deku Leaf. Once spinning, they activate a nearby object. |
![]() | Grappling Poles These are used as targets for the Grappling Hook. You can stop swinging and climb atop these as well. |
![]() | Pots Every dungeon is littered with fragile pots, many of which contain small treasures and prizes. Some dungeons have pinecones or skulls that act the same way. |
![]() | Ropes Link can jump onto ropes and swing or climb them. If he lets go of he rope at the end of a swing he will cover alot of ground in the air. |
![]() | Sealed Doors Some dungeon doors are sealed. To open them, you usually must accomplish an objective in the room, such as defeating enemies. |
| Spikes Contact with these will knock Link's life guage down a heart or two. |
![]() | Springboards Climb onto a springboard and use your Iron Boots to compress it. Remove the Iron Boots and it will launch you into the air. |
| Switches Switches are pressure sensitive objects that trigger an effect when stepped on. |
![]() | Torches Torches illuminate darkened rooms and you use them to light Deku Sticks. Unlike a Deku Stick, a torch never goes out. |
![]() | Warp Jars Most dungeons have three warp jars, but the top is covered by rock or wood. You must bomb or light them on fire to open them. Drop into an activated warp jar and you will appear at another activated warp jar elsewhere in the dungeon. |
![]() | Water Pots You can lift and throw water pots at enemies who are vunerable to injury by water, and you can also throw them onto hot lava to create a temporary platform. |
![]() | Wind Crest When you see one of these circular blue tiles, stand on it and conduct the Wind's Requiem with the Wind Waker. You always get a nice surprize. |
