A Link to the Past Upgrades
A Link to the Past featured many new and unique weapons, items, and equipment. A select handful of these weapons, items, and equipment could be upgraded to create a stronger forged item or give you more stock of an item. This guide will help you figure out which items can be upgraded and which upgrades can be found.
The Magic Boomerang
You can upgrade your plain old Blue Boomerang for a nice, magical Boomerang! Head towards Zora's Domain, and once you have the flippers, swim into the waterfall just west of the entrance to Zora's Domain (Zora's Waterfall). Inside you will find a small pond. Walk up to it and it will allow you to select an item. Choose your boomerang and throw it in. Once the fairy appears, tell her you threw it in and she will upgrade your Boomerang.
Easy Magic Potion
At the same fairy pond as above, toss an empty bottle instead of your Boomerang and the fairy will fill it with magic potion. You can repeat this as long as you have an empty bottle to fill.
Red Shield
The second level shield, the Red Shield will better protect Link from fireball attacks. Normally people end up buying this shield from the shop, but you can toss your old shield into the fairy pond from above to claim a nice new Red Shield!
Bomb / Arrow Carrying Capacity
There is a fairy located in a cave (Cave of Happiness) on a small island at Lake Hylia. Once you approach the pond, a message will appear asking you to throw in rupees. Toss in the highest amount and it will give you your fortune (good or bad luck for the day). Wait a few seconds and return to the pond, again throwing in as many rupees as possible. Once you've thrown in a total of 100 rupees, a fairy will appear asking what you would like upgraded, choose either arrows or bombs. Continue this until you've maxed out your arrow and bomb capacity (you will also later be able to toss more rupees in at once, so don't worry)!
1/2 Magic Meter
At the Smithies house in Kakariko Village is a small cavern in the ground, you will need the Magic Hammer in order to reach it. Smash the wooden stake down and drop into the hole. Inside, head north and sprikle some magic powder on the statue. A bat will appear and hit you will magic, causing your magic meter to cut in half. I was always confused, as it seems like he tried to hurt you, but chuckles about it, and now you consume half the magic you did before!
Tempered Sword (Red Sword)
You can have your Master Sword tempered once you find the Titan's Mitt from Gargoyle Palace (fourth dungeon). Head south of the Village of Outcasts and you will find a small frog stuck behind some dark rocks. Lift the rocks and approach the frog. He will ask you to bring him back to his brother, which is the Smithy from Kakariko Village. Warp to the Light World and return to the Smithies house. They will thank you everytime you try to talk to them, so exit and reenter. Talk to one of the Smithies and they will offer to temper your sword for a small fee.
Golden Sword
This is the last sword upgrade you will receive, and it will come near the end of the game. After you defeat the bosses in the fifth and sixth dungeons of the Dark World, a new bomb appears that you can buy, and its located at Link's house in the Dark World. Go buy the Super Bomb and take it to the Pyramid of Power. Just up the first set of steps, you will see a large square area in the wall with cracks. Lay the bomb there and it will open a new fairy cave. Inside, throw the tempered sword into the pond to receive the strongest of swords (you can also toss the other fairy upgraded items into this pond if you missed them earlier)!
Silver Arrows
These are very important in your quest! Once you've blown up and opened the fairy cave on the Pyramid of Power, throw in your regular bow and arrows. The fairy will appear, so admit you tossed them in. She will give you some information about Ganon's true weakness and upgrade your arrows to silver arrows!
Other Upgradeable Items
